Hillman City, King County
We sweep Hillman City chimneys for $189 to $449 per flue. The bottom figure fits a single open fireplace with light soot and a roof you can walk. A wood stove that has to be slid out from the wall, a tall flue, a steep pitch, or a thick layer of deposit lands the job closer to the top figure. Either way the price covers firebox, damper, smoke chamber and the flue from bottom to cap.

Very few homes around here burn wood to stay warm. The census asks every household which fuel heats it most, and in ZIP area 98118, which holds Hillman City, the answer is wood for about 29 of 19,176 occupied homes; electricity and gas cover nearly everyone else. The same table cannot say how many of those houses keep a fireplace for weekends and cold snaps, and the Census Bureau is clear that it only records the main fuel. So most flues we brush on these blocks belong to occasional fires, not daily heating, and that changes what we find inside.
Every chimney sweep we do in Hillman City includes:
Smoke coming back into the room, or a smell that won't go? Book the inspection first.
Book nowOccasional fires are often cool fires: a few logs lit on a damp evening, let to smolder, then closed off. Smoke from a fire like that cools early in the flue and leaves more deposit per log than a hot, steady burn. CSIA says a masonry fireplace needs sweeping once soot hits 1/8 inch, or as soon as glaze appears. A fireplace used a dozen times a winter can reach that point without anyone noticing a problem from the room.
Washington amended the residential code for masonry fireplaces in WAC 51-51-1001, effective March 16, 2024, and two of its demands sit right where a sweep works. One is glass or metal doors that close tight across the fireplace opening, unless an approved fan induces the draft instead. The other is a supply of combustion air brought in from outdoors, through a duct of at least six square inches that has its own working damper. The rule also asks for a ferrous metal damper at least eight inches above the opening.
Seattle's own Tip 303A, last updated in December 2021, repeats the doors and outside-air points for solid-fuel appliances. Since we already have the damper in hand and the opening exposed, we check that each of these parts exists and moves, and we tell you in the sweep note if one is missing or seized. Nothing about a sweep itself needs a permit.
A drop-cloth path leads to the hearth, and plastic closes the fireplace mouth with only our vacuum hose passing through.
A light and a scraper tell us how thick the soot is and whether any of it has glazed.
Rods and a brush head matched to the flue travel the whole height, from the roof or from below as conditions allow.
Debris leaves the house in sealed bags; you get photos and a short note on anything worth watching.

Usually once a year, or when the deposit reaches the CSIA mark. Light use with slow, smoky fires can build deposit faster than people expect.
We look at everything we brush and tell you what we see. A full written inspection with a camera survey is booked separately at $99 plus tax, and those $99 drop off any quote of ours you accept.
No. Plastic closes the opening around a HEPA vacuum, and cloths cover the floor before a single rod comes out of the van.
