Rainier Beach is a lakeside neighborhood at the south end of the Rainier Valley, set on Lake Washington — a South Seattle neighborhood of mid-century homes near the lake. Homes like these are our bread and butter, and their chimneys have usually earned a proper look, not a quick patch and a wave goodbye.

Down by Lake Washington, the Rainier Beach blocks sit in moist lake air on top of Seattle's nine-month rainy stretch. Brick that never fully dries gives up its mortar sooner, and metal caps and dampers rust ahead of schedule — so on these streets we watch the tops of chimneys especially closely.
