Fireplace season and rain season are the same season in this city. On WeatherSpark's calendar, Seattle's wet half of the year opens October 10 and closes April 30, and November is the soggiest month on it: about 7.5 inches, landing on 16.7 days in a typical year. Not a wood one. Puget Sound Clean Air Agency works in two stages. Stage 1 darkens wood fireplaces, plus stoves and inserts that were never certified. Stage 2 goes further and takes in certified models and pellet stoves too. Only a household that lacks any other adequate heat, and was granted the agency's exemption beforehand, may keep burning.
Give them time to go fully cold, shovel them into a lidded metal can, and leave the can outside, clear of the house. The State Fire Marshal recommends exactly that, and also asks families to keep kids three feet from a burning fireplace.
The yearly check is, yes. NFPA 211, as CSIA presents it, calls for an annual inspection even on rarely used flues. If the soot measures under 1/8 inch with no glaze, we will say the brushing can be skipped this year.
