All ten of our neighborhoods are inside the Seattle city limits, in King County. Beacon Hill is the ridge, a north-south spine that reaches 350 feet. Georgetown lies west of it on the floor of the Duwamish valley. East of the ridge the Rainier Valley runs about seven miles toward the lake, with Columbia City, Hillman City, Brighton and Othello along it; most of that ground came into Seattle with the 1907 annexation. Mount Baker, Seward Park and Rainier Beach are the three on the lakeshore. One permit office and one air agency cover all of them, but the ground does not behave the same way everywhere: the city names both valleys as areas where soil can liquefy in an earthquake.
