Under R1003.9.1 a masonry chimney needs a cap of concrete, metal or stone, pitched to drain, fitted with a drip edge, and isolated from the flue liners by a caulked bond break. If a spark arrestor is added (R1003.9.2), the arrestor's net free area has to be four times the flue outlet or more, the screen must match 19-gage galvanized or 24-gage stainless steel for heat and corrosion resistance, and openings must stop a 1/2-inch sphere while passing a 3/8-inch one.
