Washington rules that apply

  • CSIA quotes NFPA 211 as requiring a yearly inspection of chimneys, fireplaces and vents covering soundness, deposits and clearances. NFPA 211 is a consensus standard rather than a Seattle ordinance; Washington's State Fire Marshal gives the same advice — a professional inspection and cleaning every year.
  • Masonry chimneys must be lined (R1003.11) with clay flue lining to ASTM C315, a listed UL 1777 lining system, a factory-built chimney listed for the purpose, or another approved material. R1003.18 requires a 2-inch air space to combustibles where the chimney runs inside the house or in an exterior wall, and 1 inch for chimneys entirely outside.
